Tools of the trades

Whether you are an engineer, a geologist, a photographer, a messman or master of a ship, everyone has special tools he or she needs to do the job. Often you buy them. Other times you have to design and build them yourself: like a one-of-a-kind robotic vehicle, called Jaguar, which was sent on its first scientific mission late Saturday night. Sometimes someone gives you tools, and sometimes, well … take the rock hammer that WHOI geochemist Susan Humphris brought to sea. “It’s just one of the hammers we keep in the lab,” she said. “It’s been there since I came as a graduate student in 1972.”
