About Susan...
Role in the expedition?
During this expedition, I will help to locate and map hydrothermal vents along the Gakkel Ridge.

Why I do what I do?
I like the feeling of exploring and discovering, of seeing something no one else has seen.

Where did I grow up?
I grew up in England. When I was 13, my family moved from south of London close to the ocean. I enjoyed horseback riding and walking the beaches near the Bristol Channel.

What were my favorite and least favorite things about school?
I liked science—physics, chemistry, mathematics—but I didn’t want to be stuck in a white lab coat, working inside a lab for the rest of my life. That’s why I chose oceanography as a career—it’s a combination of the science and excitement of going to sea.
