Day 3, July 9, posted July 10, 2008
Photos and story by Chris Linder and Amy Nevala (because of a family emergency, Amy is reporting and editing from Cape Cod)
Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland, with a population of about 4,500 people, and a top tourist draw in the country. In winter, travelers come to dogsled and hunt. In summer, they come to gawk at 20 million tons of ice disgorged from the Ilulissat Ice Fjord, located just south of the town (appropriately, Ilulissat is the Greenlandic word for “icebergs”). Today, as we explored town, our science party stocked up on fresh bread and cheese in preparation for our early morning departure to the ice sheet. Along the way, we learned from a local educator how a warming climate has already changed her lifestyle (and influenced her wardrobe), and what concerns she has about a warmer future.
