Frank is a former WHOI joint-program student whose day job is as a patent/intellectual property attorney in Los Angeles. He is a volunteer engineer working with the AUV team. He is hoping to adapt a couple of "CMUcams," small, programmable robotic vision cameras for use as upward-facing, open-ice detectors. Right now, the AUV's have all their sensors looking downwards. But in the ice, to be able to surface autonomously, you need to be able to look up at the ice as well to find a spot of open water.
